How Tatas responded after Mumbai terrorist attacks

What Ratan Tata did for the Mumbai victims…. what every Indian should know!

Ratan Tata is the chairman of Indian Hotels who own the Taj Mahal Hotel Mumbai, which was the target of the terrorists on 26/11/08.

Hotel President a 5 star property also belongs to Indian Hotels.

The following is really touching.

What Ratan Tata did for the Mumbai victims…. Don’t miss!!!!!!

SALUTE TO MR. RATAN TATA

A. The Tata Gesture

1. All category of employees including those who had completed even 1 day as casuals were treated on duty during the time the hotel was closed.

2. Relief and assistance to all those who were injured and killed

3. The relief and assistance was extended to all those who died at the railway station, surroundings including the “Pav- Bha ji” vendor and the pan shop owners.

4. During the time the hotel was closed, the salaries were sent by money order.

5. A psychiatric cell was established in collaboration with Tata Institute of Social Sciences to counsel those who needed such help.

6. The thoughts and anxieties going on people’s mind was constantly tracked and where needed psychological help provided.

7. Employee outreach centers were opened where all help, food, water, sanitation, first aid and counseling was provided. 1600 employees were covered by this facility.

8. Every employee was assigned to one mentor and it was that person’s responsibility to act as a “single window” clearance for any help that the person required.

9. Ratan Tata personally visited the families of all the 80 employees who in some manner – either through injury or getting killed – were affected.

10. The dependents of the employees were flown from outside Mumbai to Mumbai and taken care off in terms of ensuring mental assurance and peace. They were all accommodated in Hotel President for 3 weeks.

11. Ratan Tata himself asked the families and dependents – as to what they wanted him to do.

12. In a record time of 20 days, a new trust was created by the Tatas for the purpose of relief of employees.

13. What is unique is that even the other people, the railway employees, the police staff, the pedestrians who had nothing to do with Tatas were covered by compensation. Each one of them was provided subsistence allowance of Rs. 10K per month for all these people for 6 months.

14. A 4 year old granddaughter of a vendor got 4 bullets in her and only one was removed in the Government hospital. She was taken to Bombay hospital and several lacs were spent by the Tatas on her to fully recover her.

15. New hand carts were provided to several vendors who lost their carts.

16. Tata will take responsibility of life education of 46 children of the victims of the terror.

17. This was the most trying period in the life of the organization. Senior managers including Ratan Tata were visiting funeral to funeral over the 3 days that were most horrible.

18. The settlement for every deceased member ranged from Rs. 36 to 85 lacs [One lakh rupees tranlates to approx 2200 US $ ] in addition to the following benefits:

a. Full last salary for life for the family and dependents;

b. Complete responsibility of education of children and dependents – anywhere in the world.

c. Full Medical facility for the whole family and dependents for rest of their life.

d. All loans and advances were waived off – irrespective of the amount.

e. Counselor for life for each person

B. Epilogue

1. How was such passion created among the employees? How and why did they behave the way they did?

2. The organization is clear that it is not something that someone can take credit for. It is not some training and development that created such behaviour. If someone suggests that – everyone laughs

3. It has to do with the DNA of the organization, with the way Tata culture exists and above all with the situation that prevailed that time. The organization has always been telling that customers and guests are #1 priority

4. The hotel business was started by Jamshedji Tata when he was insulted in one of the British hotels and not allowed to stay there.

5. He created several institutions which later became icons of progress, culture and modernity. IISc is one such institute. He was told by the rulers that time that he can acquire land for IISc to the extent he could fence the same. He could afford fencing only 400 acres.

6. When the HR function hesitatingly made a very rich proposal to Ratan – he said – do you think we are doing enough?

7. The whole approach was that the organization would spend several hundred crore in re-building the property – why not spend equally on the employees who gave their life?

I Salute Mr. Ratan Tata.

Bobby Fischer’s life on sale

Today I came across interesting and somewhat sad news of “Bobby fischer’s life for sale on eBay”. I have read and studied his games and I truly believe that he was one of the greatest (and mysterious) chess players. The material may be important because after 1971, Fischer had reached a stage in chess where he felt there was no challenge left on the defined games of chess within those 64 squares and he had actually proposed some innovations to the game to make it more challenging.

On a side note, I somehow think Boris Becker and Bobby Fischer had one very important thing in common. Both these players introduced psychological aspects to their respective sport. Boris Becker had the habit of identifying key points of the game and so did Bobby Fischer. Another pair of sports personalities is Pete Sampras and Gary Kasparov. Both great players and will be rated strongest players in the history of their game. They were ruthlessly dominating and had complete games. They may not be the most popular but very effective and their results have been the best in their sport.

Sawai Gandharva 2005

I watched classical performers at Sawai Gandharva Mahotsava this year. This was the first time I saw live performances. I could only manage to be there on Saturday evening when Piyu Sarkhel, Sujata Mohopatra and Pt. Rajan and Sajan Misra performed. All three of them performed really well. Sujata Mohopatra’s Odissi performance deserves special mention! Pt. Misra brothers were good as usual.

One felt the noticeable difference in crowd attention between good performances and average performances (there are no bad performances usually at Sawai). Pt. Misra were totally in control of the 10000+ crowd. Everybody wanted to soak in the brilliant jugalbandi. I for one don’t really understand the classical nitty-gritty however, it was definitely pleasing to ears.

Owing to my new apartment community meeting, I could not attend Sunday’s session when Pt. Hariprasad was slated to perform. He is one performer who never disappoints. 🙁

Btw, 2005 was only the second year when Pt. Bhimsen Joshi could not sing at Sawai.

Knee Surgery and ToI

Continuing the thread on ToI quality and unilateral coverage, I found this email that my friend sent to ToI Editor around the time Mr. Vajpeyee’s knee surgery (2000) was being extensively covered by Times Of India. Everything from polls to greetings to teaching knee joint mechanisms was done by ToI. Here is the actual email.

Dear Sir-

I’m glad to see that your web edition is covering, step-by-step, the
knee surgery that is to be performed on our beloved prime minister.

While you are at it, may I suggest including details about my
grandfather’s hip surgery. My grandfather is a self-made man, freedom
fighter, and a true patriot. Surely he deserves all the attention and
coverage that your esteemed paper bestows.

I’ll be glad to forward you all the details. Please let me know when.

Warm Regards,

Interesting movie topics

Along the lines of the latest movie ‘Mein Meri Patni aur Woh’, I can think of some interesting topics –

  • Married couple where wife is earning more
  • Married couple where the husband is homemaker and is good looking
  • Married couple who work in the same organization and team
  • Journey of a software company CEO who is trying to start outsourcing with an Indian IT company
  • Movie that triggers off debate about inequality created by IT field in India (chances of success are high – can be controversial and IT employees will definitely watch it)

Today’s quote:
Entrepreneurs who enjoy the journey of new venture creation and management are likely to be more successful than those who set deadlines for success!!

World Chess Championship – San Luis, Anand, Chess etc.

I follow chess tournaments quite regularly, and specially the ones in which Anand participates. I have noticed this trend with Anand in various tournaments in the last couple of years. If Anand loses an important game or makes a blunder midway in the tournament, he crumbles under pressure. He probably thinks to himself ‘how could I make that mistake?’ and that really affects his games against relatively weaker opponents. I thought I was the only one who thought that way. I read this Kasparov interview about San Luis at Chessbase and he also expresses similar thing about Anand’s performance at San Luis. I have seen the same thing at Linares earlier this year and at San Luis, he lost important game to Peter Leko (I think) from which he did not recover in the first round. He needs to improve that aspect big time or else, he is running against time to capture another world title.

Peruwala

Sometimes I get asked about reasons for returning to India. Most of the times I cant think of any because I myself cannot put a finger on it. But one of the important reasons for coming back would have to be the variety of fruits I can eat in India. I enjoy Jambhul, Mango (Alphanso!!!), Guava (Peru in Marathi) and Karavande. I totally enjoy that stuff.. And, many people who know me well call me Khavaiyya. Any place that I have stayed for sometime, I know good eating joints there!

Few days ago I came across a hawker (I plan to ask him his name next time around) who sells fresh guavas at a specific location in Pune (Model Colony). I decided to give it a try once and I really liked the stuff he carries. He manages to get juicy, fresh and tasty guavas. Like a true Puneri he is around only between 11-1 everyday. If you are passing by DSK Toyota Showroom, you cannot miss him. Over the last month or two, I am one of his regular customers. I like the fruits so much that I simply hand over 100 rupee note and he returns me some cash – no bargaining (our chartered accountant wont approve of this, most probably). But I get good quality stuff in return – probably the best of the lot.

So, when I went there today, he was talking to one lady about the prices. She was complaining about the prices and said it’s farmers market and you farmers are earning a lot. At that moment, he made very sharp remark ‘If I was a farmer, I wouldnt be selling fruits in Pune’. He in fact mentioned that his brothers are not getting a job because they are of a particular caste. One of his brothers is a Mechanical engineer and will be graduating soon.

The comment by the lady has made me think about how she viewed the world around her. She will probably not hesitate to pay few hundred rupees extra for cosmetics but just a slight increase in rate for the fruit and she was extremely unhappy. Btw, those of you who dont know about the rates of guavas these days, a medium sized fruit would cost you about 3-4Rs (up from 2Rs 2-3 years ago). Thats not bad for good quality stuff. Well, I for one, dont mind paying extra if quality is good. And, oh yes – I also dont care sometimes, because I know I am lucky enough to eat such fresh guavas!!! In US, this is a luxury.

Ebay’s Skype acquisition

I am predicting that ebay will use skype client for personalization and notification.

  • ebay and Skype combined has the technology to build a multi-purpose network to handle the dialogue between ebay and its user community. I would go one step further and extend it to provide a powerful tool for people to set up dialogue between potential buyers/sellers. The dialogue will enable ebay to help users to judge the identity of the person (perceptions about other party).
  • It will also be the engine that can be used to create negotiation framework (even though negotiations are not allowed in a true spirit of ‘auction’)
  • The merger with skype also means that there will be addition in ebay users worldwide.
  • The technology will offer another revenue generation tool for PC to phone network. However, the question really is whether Skype will exist as we know today.

Apart from other things, I am very interested in knowing how ebay goes about handling merger issues – given that ebay’s success totally hinges around success to leverage user’s identity data.

Wobulation

Today, I came across this new technology from HP. Like all new technologies, this promises to deliver better results with lower price components! 😉

It’s not a bug – it’s a feature!

Btw, I am going through the froogle stage of my TV shopping for my new house. If you have any suggestions, do let me know. I am thinking of going for a low-tech TV (cheap n best)! HD is going to take a few years to show up in Pune! May be a good time to spend that money somewhere else!!!

Tekdi-gatha

Tekdi(Hill) has a special place in the heart of every Puneri. If you are an outsider who happens to visit Puneri Tekdis in the morning, I won’t be surprised if you thought that Punekars are fitness freaks. Well, I am also one of those fitness freaks. Fortunately, we happened to stay very close to Vaghjaee Tekdi. I love to go out in the morning and have a good jog around the hills or just a stroll around Parvati. Last few days, I have been struck by conversations that I overheard while I was out on the hill. Let me put down this conversation between these guys A and B (both Punekars who by definition assume godness).

A to B: Geet-ramayan aikun punha Ramayan ghadalyachi Anubhuti Jhali!
B to A: Yes, but I have a basic doubt – If Seeta was Ram’s wife, why the hell was Hanuman going around Lanka setting it on fire?

Now, I know some people like to express their opinions because God has given unique outlets to everyone but this conversation just hit me real bad – these guys were looking at things in a convoluted manner!!! I am not at all blessed with such talent – thank you O Lord!

Few years ago, I had conducted a drive to clean the Vaghjaee hill close to my house and around that time some of the people passing by(!!) have offered me lot of words of wisdom(it’s free – what to do? we are like this only!). I am putting down some that I recollect –

  • Kahi Oopayog nahi – he zopadpatti vale kachra taknar aani tumhi uchalat rahnar. Vel Phukat Ghalavtay tumhi.
  • Mee Swataha Eka Shalecha Principal hoto – He lok adanich rahanar (?!?)
  • Tumche karya oottam aahe, pun plastic kami honar aahe ka? Gadge baba pune shevti kantalle
  • Tumhi hatat gloves ghala aani kachra uchala karan jantu phar astat.
  • Kachra uchaloon kuthe takta? Kay karta tumhi nokri-dhanda?(with a grin)
  • Tumhi eekde kachra uchaltay pun te zopadpatti wale kay kachra takatat aani varyani udun yetoch aahe.

Fortunately, by looking at us for a few days, 3 more people joined us in this work and we managed to clean a lot of plastic from the hill. I still remember it was 3 years ago before Monsoon and we succeeded in cleaning up 80-90% of the hills around Vaghjaee. But that experience brought out finer socio-economic issues.

The funny part is, as people move up the income levels, they start complaining about the living that they themselves practised.

I plan to cover much more on the socio-economic imbalances in future. Stay Tuned.
